Over the years, I have searched for a way to better portray an athlete in their playing environment. Various angles, treatments, lens lengths etc. never really produced the results I envisioned.
Eventually, I noticed a habit of mine to shoot from a distance, at a fairly low angle, in portrait orientation with the athlete in the lower third of the image and the crowd, stadium and environment filling the top two-thirds. When done correctly, it accurately portrays the feeling of being down on the sidelines looking around the stadiums while working. The athlete stands out from the crowd while simultaneously fitting in to the overall environment.
This is the Lower Third Series.
